E-Textiles Fabric Fun Final Project
E-Textile Butterfly
We will create a mixed media 3D sculpture inspired by the Butterfly Exhibit at the Echo, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain. We will sew LEDs into fabric and build simple circuits sewing with conductive thread. We will consider the creative and combined use of media and display pieces collectively at the end of the project.
Let's have some fun...
Look around you! What inspires you?
[The ECHO Butterfly Exhibit was a relaxing time after a long week of class.
I saw so many different species of Butterflies. Species Guide ]
The NAEA Standards
addressed in this assignment:
Grade 6, 7 & 8
PLAN / PROCESS
VA:Pr5.1.6a Demonstrate
openness in trying
new ideas,
materials, methods,
and approaches in
making works of art
and design.
VA:Pr5.1.7a Based on criteria,
analyze and
evaluate methods
for preparing and
presenting art.
VA:Pr5.1.8a Collaboratively prepare and present
selected theme-
based artwork for
display, and
formulate exhibition
narratives for the
viewer.
PRODUCT
All grades will brainstorm ways in which completed works will be displayed.
VA:Pr5.1.6a Individually or collaboratively, develop a visual plan for displaying works of art, analyzing exhibit space, the needs of the viewer, and the layout of the exhibit.
VA:Re.7.1.7a Explain how the
method of display,
the location, and
the experience of
an artwork
influence how it is
perceived and
valued.
VA:Re.7.1.8a Explain how a
person’s aesthetic
choices are
influenced by
culture and
environment and
impact the visual
image that one
conveys to others.
Idea Development/ Prototype |
As you plan for your creation, let's look at the basic Elements and Principles of Design:
Color - What catches your eye?
Line - Observe all the fine details.
Shape/Form - consider sketching from observation during your butterfly trip visit.
Texture - choose a variety of materials to combine!
Space
Balance - Symmetry,
Contrast
Unity - Making your work neat, complete and shwoing you met the criteria.
Gather materials including scissors & fabric, LEDs, LilyTwinkle, hoop, needles.... and other fun stuff you can find! |
I found an Embroidery Hoop worked best for keep material flat and conductive thread from tangling. |
Loading a bobbin up with conductive thread is a good tip for helping with tangles of thread!
(you can also run threaded needle through beeswax)
Sew a LillyTwinkle and a battery pack to chosen fabric that is stretched on the hoop. Be sure to use conductive threads. Try to keep stitches as neat as possible.
Making Mistakes is better than faking perfection! Practice Makes Progress!
Be sure none of your threads overlap as you sew.
The battery pack needs to connect to the LilyTwinkle:
Positive to a Positive
&
Negative to a Negative
Remember the positive points of your LED need to connect to your numbered points on the LilyTwinkle.
All negative points on the LEDs need to connect and link back to the LilyTwinkle
Use various textures and colors of material to create the body of the butterfly.
I used hot glue to do this part. Be mindful of glue temperature and visibility.
It's very hot and it may look uplanned if the blobs of glue show.
Be sure to loop conductive threads around each component hole to ensure connectivity once switched on.
Practice sewing technique by using the blanket stitch. You can choose contrasting colors of your choice!
As you sew be sure to leave access to the battery pack so you can turn the on/off setting switch for trouble shooting as you go and for display at the end!
Be sure to reach around to the back to turn your battery pack switch on. Then watch your Butterfly wings twinkle away!
AND THE FINAL PRODUCT -
The LilyTwinkle lighting up the butterfly wings. |
NOW....I am ready to start another one!
